From Coffee Sacks to Community Impact: How CDDL Is Supporting Local Initiatives Through Upcycling
At CDDL, we believe that sustainable waste management goes beyond bins and collections. It’s about making smarter choices with the resources we already have — and finding ways to support the communities we work in every day. One of our recent upcycling projects is a perfect example of how a simple idea can have a ripple effect of positive change.
When we collected a batch of coffee sacks from a high-end barista client, we knew these sturdy, reusable materials were far too valuable to be discarded. So instead of letting them go to waste, we gave them a second life — and in doing so, supported a network of local schools, charities, and community groups across Kent.
How It Started: Coffee Sacks with Potential
These aren’t your average coffee sacks. Made from hessian or jute, they’re strong, natural, and full of character — the kind of material that’s ideal for upcycling projects. The sacks originally arrived with deliveries of premium coffee beans to one of our barista clients, and once emptied, were simply surplus to requirements.
Rather than sending them to general waste or recycling, we stepped in and offered to collect them with a plan to put them to good use. What began as a straightforward collection turned into a creative community project with long-lasting benefits.
Supporting Local Schools and Sheppey Matters
The first stop for the coffee sacks was local schools. Teachers and educators are always on the lookout for creative, cost-effective resources for upcycling — and the sacks proved to be a hit. From being used in sensory play areas to craft projects and even as planters for school gardens, they’ve sparked imagination and supported sustainability education in classrooms across the region.
We also donated a batch to Sheppey Matters, a registered charity doing incredible work on the Isle of Sheppey. Their mission is all about regeneration and community support — two things that align closely with our own values. Once in Sheppey Matters’ hands, the sacks were distributed even further to charities, social groups, and individuals in need of practical resources.
Practical Help for Allotment Holders and Gardeners
One group that especially benefited from the sacks were allotment holders and community gardeners. The natural fibres in coffee sacks make them ideal for lining planters, creating weed barriers, or storing compost and soil. Best of all, they’re reusable and eco-friendly — a sustainable alternative to plastic sheeting or one-time-use garden products.

These allotment projects are often at the heart of local communities. They bring people together, encourage healthy lifestyles, and promote biodiversity. By providing a free, reusable resource, we’re helping to keep these spaces thriving — while preventing useful materials from ending up in landfill.
The Bigger Picture: Waste as a Resource
This project is a great reminder that not all waste is waste. With a bit of creative thinking, everyday items that might be discarded can instead become valuable resources for others. Coffee sacks, for example, are often overlooked. But in the right hands, they can be upcycled into bags, cushions, planters, mats — even artwork.
By intercepting these items before they enter the waste stream, we’re reducing the volume of waste that needs to be processed, supporting local charities, and promoting reuse across the board. It’s the kind of circular approach to sustainability that we’re proud to be part of.
Community Connections Matter
At CDDL, we don’t just see ourselves as a waste management company — we see ourselves as part of the communities we serve. Whether it’s through our regular collections, specialist recycling services, or small-scale donation projects like this one, we’re always looking for ways to make a positive impact.
The coffee sack initiative is just one of many community-focused efforts we’ve supported. Over the years, we’ve worked with schools, social enterprises, and local councils to ensure that wherever possible, waste is minimised and resources are reused. It’s a small gesture that can make a big difference — not just environmentally, but socially too.
Want to Get Involved?
Do you have surplus materials that could be reused or donated instead of binned? Whether you’re a business with packaging waste, a café with containers, or a manufacturer with offcuts, we’d love to hear from you. Often, the things you no longer need could be incredibly useful to a local school, charity, or community garden — and we’re happy to help make those connections happen.
Final Thoughts
What started with a pile of coffee sacks has turned into something much more meaningful. Through thoughtful redistribution and community partnerships, we’ve helped turn waste into resources, supported local projects, and contributed to a more circular, sustainable approach to waste management.
We’re proud to be part of a growing movement that looks at waste differently — not just as something to get rid of, but as something with value, potential, and purpose.
